My German Shepherd’s back Legs Wobble!

October 29, 2025

“My German Shepherd can’t walk,” and “My German Shepherd can’t go upstairs,” are also commonly searched phrases for conditions that often get diagnosed as Hip Dysplasia or Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). My German Shepherd’s back legs wobble is what I usually hear from members.

I have helped many German Shepherds that were dragging a back leg, and one was even in a wheelchair/cart because his back end was too weak to walk anymore. Gandaulf was diagnosed as having Degenerative Myelopathy and his “Mom” was a veterinary assistant so she knew that the outlook was grim without some other kind of help than what her boss could offer.

Two sessions about two weeks apart and he was out of his cart and walking. It wasn’t pretty at first, but she got him tuned up monthly after that.  He continued to get better until he was back patrolling her 10-acre property every day. Did he have DM? Is DM even a real condition? I don’t know. I leave those things to the veterinarians. My way of looking at it is, “Hmm, dog can’t walk.”

“German Shepherd bunny hop gait hind legs”

That is what Sheryl in Sequim, Washington told me about her 11-year-old German Shepherd Coco. Here is a video of that case.

Another German Shepherd that dragged his hind leg was a 7-year-old GSD male who belonged to a preacher friend of mine. That dog was diagnosed by his vet as having hip dysplasia.  He always walked better after his tune-up, and it lasted about one to two months.
