Home Treatment for Dachshund Back Pain

November 12, 2025
Healey is happy again!

It’s no secret that dachshunds are prone to back pain issues. So, naturally lots of people are searching for home remedies for their yelping dog. Sadly, most of what I see on the internet is the usual baloney designed to sell products of questionable value.

How Can I Prevent My Dachshund Getting Back Pain?

If your dachshund has recently recovered from a back pain episode you will want to do what you can to prevent it happening again. To do that you need to have some idea of what went wrong in the first place. I can tell you that from my perspective as a chiropractor who has worked with animals for about 45 years, too much attention is paid to the lower to middle back area where the obvious symptoms are. The initial insult to the spine is most often in the neck. (Here is a video of several dachshunds that had this issue and got it fixed.)

Wait! What?

Jumping down off beds, chairs and couches causes repeated microtrauma to the neck as the muscles that support the head tighten to prevent their chin from hitting the floor. Over time this results in neck muscles becoming locked and tense affecting the balance and flexibility of the rest of the spine. Ultimately, it interferes with the flow of chi energy and can also affect the nerve communication channels between brain and body. If this situation persists it will even bring on paralysis of the hind legs.

How Can You Support Good Neck Balance in Your Dachshund?

The best home treatment for dachshund back pain is to use a harness for leash walking and stairs or ramps for getting up and down from furniture, so you don’t stress their neck.  And if your dog is currently having back pain or paralysis, then you need a care program designed to restore balance to the spine, especially the neck, so the flow of chi and the nerve communication system return to normal. This is what we’ve been doing at Healing Ministry for Animals Private Membership Association for decades. And as part of the process, you learn how to do this for your own pet!
