Often seen as a dog that picks up a hind leg when it runs, or skipping on its hind feet, luxating patella in dogs seems to be a more frequent diagnosis in small dogs (like Yorkies, Poodles, and Chihuahuas), but it can affect larger dogs as well. It can also be much more severe and cause the dog to yelp in pain or even be unable to walk at all.
What is the cause of luxating patella in dogs?
PetMD says, “most dogs with a luxating patella are genetically predisposed to the condition. This means there is nothing a pet parent can do to prevent the condition.”
My impression is that the “genetics” card gets played when the cause is not well understood. It is easy, convenient and means you are helpless to do anything about it other than treat the symptoms. I want to know why things happen. What is the cause-and-effect relationship?
Can anything be done besides treating symptoms with drugs?
Surgery! At about $3000 per knee, a long recovery period, and with a high rate of failure in larger breeds, I would explore conservative approaches first.
What has Healing Ministry for Animals done for luxating patella in dogs?
My work is based on correcting nerve and energetic interference to the normal functioning of the body in humans and animals. When a condition like luxating patella in dogs gets better after several sessions of Neuro-Energetic Balancing™, I believe it is because better mind-body communication and improved energy flow has re-balanced the muscles involved and restored normal knee function and mechanics.
Our Neuro-Energetic Balancing™ has helped many undiagnosed limps in dogs. I have personally worked with a couple of dogs that had been diagnosed by veterinarians with Bilateral Luxating Patella, meaning both kneecaps dislocate. One was a Newfoundland puppy named Daisy. Here is her video, which is quite remarkable. And the other was an older Maltese mix named Lily. She could barely walk and was extremely fearful when I met her. In one session she went from fearful and in pain to happy and running! I wish I had videoed that one!
