About 25% of dachshunds become paralyzed at some time in their life. How many dachshunds will become paralyzed more than once if they recover from the first time?
Google AI says, “If a dachshund recovers from paralysis, the chance of it happening again (recurrence) is significant, with studies showing around 25% of surgically treated dogs experience another herniation, often within 3 years, though non-surgical recovery can see up to 50% re occurrence of signs.” The non-surgical cases got medication and sometimes physical therapy for their first occurrence.
There’s a lot more about the theory of why there is such a high rate of relapse. They say the breed is predisposed by their long backs, and other discs were probably also injured and then they gave out, but I have a different perspective. I have worked with many paralyzed dachshunds and corgis, another long-backed dog, and many of them were on their second time around with so-called IVDD. Here is a video of one such case which recovered and lived 5 more years without trouble.
My experience is that after Neuro-Energetic Balancing™ the dog’s body is in better physical and energetic balance and so tissue healing is more complete and there is less strain on all the ligaments and muscles. I have seen dogs from 4-8 years later that have never had another occurrence.
I Train You to Reset Your Pet for Health Maintenance
As part of my program when I work with pet owners, I train them in a simple reset procedure I call The Rasmussen Reset to do between our sessions and then to keep up for the animal’s health maintenance after our work is through. Better balance builds better health.
On the other hand, Google finishes with a warning. “In essence, while a recovery is wonderful, a dachshund that has had IVDD needs lifelong spinal care as the underlying predisposition remains, making future episodes quite likely.”
