Allergies in dogs are at an all-time high and are still going higher. Some estimates put dog allergies at 90 percent of our beloved companions! So, many people are asking, what is the best allergy medicine for dogs? But is that the right question?
Why are so many dogs having allergies these days?
Now that is a good question! What has happened to dogs in the last twenty-five or so years that has caused this unbelievable statistic? Tons has happened! In a nutshell, allergies are caused by the body’s response to its environment. I recently quoted (LINK) a statement from Google AI that pointed the finger at many supposed environmental causes of allergies. This was a tired old list of things that haven’t changed much over the past 25 years. The two things that were left off the list that have increased tremendously are vaccines and medications.
Can changes in veterinary medicine be considered an environmental shift?
My answer is that the internal environment of our pets’ bodies is even more important than the external environment. So, a vaccine schedule that says we should be jabbing our puppies with 15 vaccines by 16 weeks and then up to 8 more annually is a gigantic increase in stress (to put it mildly) on their internal environment. Each shot causes a full-body inflammatory response that persists long after the injection site has calmed down. In addition to that, vaccines have been implicated in causing changes in the balance of microflora in the gut. This change affects the immune system and has been considered a big factor in mental and emotional health as well for both humans and animals.
Can we change the internal environment back to normal?
Yes, but there are factors to consider. Vaccines and medicines both contain complex compounds not found in nature and some of those even contain heavy metals. Heavy metals can be challenging to remove, but the body will do its best to get rid of them if it has all the right systems functioning fully. The best ways to restore normal function are feeding high quality food (if it is in a package that can sit on a shelf for months or years it bears careful scrutiny) free of preservatives, colorings, flavorings and pesticides as well as corn and soy. I am also suspicious of using very many carbohydrates like grains, potatoes and sweet potatoes. Add probiotics to their diet to help culture the mouth and gut. What else can you do to restore balance to your pet’s body?
A body that has endured the internal environmental onslaught I’ve discussed is out of balance in the nerve and energy systems as well and is undoubtably stuck in a fight/flight response. The fastest most complete way to reset all of that is through Neuro-Energetic Balancing™. If you would like to learn more about how that could help your pet, I (Dr. Nels, a chiropractor not a veterinarian) offer a free phone consultation just for the asking.
