Are Paralyzed Dogs Sad Because They Are Paralyzed?

Bernie is happy again!

Sometimes failure is really success dressed as a sad clown.

I had helped a lot of paralyzed dogs and cats get back on their feet again by the time I met Bernie, a paralyzed King Charles Spaniel. He had been involved in a car accident and injured his back which had caused his paralysis. Unfortunately, the owners had jumped into the surgical option before they heard of my work. The surgery was unsuccessful in restoring his ability to walk which prompted his “parents” to keep looking for answers until they found me.

Can paralyzed dogs get better after a failed surgery?

At that time, I hadn’t much experience with post-surgical paralysis so I accepted the case thinking there would be a chance of success. Experience has since taught me that if they can’t walk after surgery and months of physical therapy, I shouldn’t waste my time and people’s money on my services. And so, with Bernie we did not obtain the desired result of seeing him walk again.

Here’s where the sad clown comes in. Since the accident Bernie had become very anxious about getting in the car and fussed and cried during the trip. Then something strange happened. His folks had to drive about 90 minutes to get to my office with him fussing and crying the whole time. But on the drive home after his first treatment, he curled up and slept the whole way with no fussing or fretting!

When they drove to my office the following week, they had the top down on their convertible Beetle and Bernie, clad in his custom sunglasses, enjoyed the ride just like he used to do before his accident. We soldiered on with eight weekly sessions before we all realized that it was going to be a fruitless endeavor to get him walking again, but the effort was not a total loss. His folks were grateful because after his Neuro-Energetic Balancing™ experience, Bernie was his happy self again!

The fight/flight reset

And this experience with Bernie is what caused me to believe the fight/flight response was getting reset by Neuro-Energetic Balancing™. Since then, I have seen sad and anxious animals reliably get happier and more comfortable with life because of my work. Now I also work with dogs that have separation anxiety, fear of riding in cars, and fear of loud noises confident that I can help them and their owners to have a better life.
